Bifrost Background

Bifrost is one place for an enterprise to route, govern, and secure every AI request its people and systems make.

AI traffic inside a company comes from many directions at once: applications and services calling models in production, agents calling tools, and employees using AI tools on their own machines. Most companies have partial control over some of it and no single place to see or govern any of it.

The Bifrost Gateway is that place. All AI traffic runs through it, and policy is set there once. Bifrost Edge extends the Gateway's reach onto employee devices, picking up the AI tools that would otherwise never touch it, which is where most shadow AI lives. Edge also removes the setup burden from employees, who sign in once and change nothing else about how they work.

When Bifrost says all AI traffic, that includes model calls, MCP tool calls, and agent activity. Routing a prompt to a model is only part of the picture. Agents call tools, read files, and take actions, and those need the same routing, governance, and security as the model calls themselves.

Bifrost runs entirely inside the customer's own infrastructure. Deployment is a single binary, and most teams are live the same day they start. All deployments are air-gapped, and no customer data leaves the customer's environment at any point.

The Two Products

Bifrost Gateway

The Gateway is the control plane. Every AI request the organization makes runs through it, whether it comes from an application in production, an internal service, an agent calling tools, or a laptop in the field. It routes each request to whichever model or provider the organization's rules point to, and applies governance and security on the way through.

It is a drop-in replacement for the OpenAI API, so existing code works after changing one base URL. No other code changes are needed.

Model calls, MCP tool calls, and agent traffic all run under the same set of rules.

Bifrost Edge

Edge is a lightweight service that runs on employee machines. It picks up AI traffic from the tools people already use and sends it through the Bifrost Gateway, so those tools come under the same policy as everything else.

This is what closes the shadow AI gap. Desktop chat apps, AI in the browser, coding agents in the terminal and editor, and the MCP servers those tools connect to would otherwise never reach the Gateway, and most organizations have no visibility into them at all.

Edge also makes the experience better for the people using those tools. There is one sign-in through the company's existing identity provider, no keys to paste into local configuration files, and no new steps to learn. Only AI traffic is routed, and nothing else on the device is inspected.

Edge installs through the device management tools companies already run and works on macOS, Windows, and Linux. Administrators choose which AI tools are in scope from the Bifrost console and can add more at any time without touching a single laptop.

Reliability at Enterprise Scale

Enterprises put Bifrost in the critical path of their AI workloads, so it has to hold up as those AI workloads grow. Enterprise resilience has been foundational across the whole stack.

  • Latency. Built in Go from the ground up, then tuned well past the defaults: memory pooled and warmed at startup, configuration held in memory so requests never hit the database, and provider connections opened ahead of time and kept open. Overhead stays in microseconds.
  • Uptime. Multiple nodes form a peer-to-peer cluster with no leader to lose. They continuously share traffic patterns, rate limit state, node health, configuration, and provider weights, so when one node sees a provider go down, the whole cluster opens the circuit and falls back at once, even across regions. Routing adapts in real time, recomputing weights from normalized latency and error rates to keep sending traffic to the best-performing provider. Deployments roll out with no downtime.

AI Gateway: Open source

Edge surfaces every app it finds in an Approvals dashboard for review, and enforces the decision on the device itself. A denied app cannot send AI traffic, and it is blocked before anything leaves the machine.
  • MCP governance. Edge reads the MCP configuration inside each supported app and builds a live inventory across the fleet: which servers are configured, on which machines, and how many. Admins allow or deny each one, and a denial is enforced on the device rather than being advisory, so a denied server cannot be used even by an app that had it configured before the policy existed.
