**TL;DR**

- An A2A gateway sits between callers and agents that speak the Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol and centralizes discovery, per-agent access, upstream credentials, transports, and logs for a multi-agent system.
- Bifrost governs A2A traffic in the same open-source gateway that governs LLM and MCP calls, bridges JSON-RPC, REST, and gRPC, and ties an agent's model and tool calls to its A2A task when the agent sends correlation headers.
- Kong AI Gateway, Gravitee, and MuleSoft Agent Fabric add A2A proxies to API management platforms on paid plans, while Google Cloud Agent Gateway and Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Gateway govern agents inside their own clouds.
- The deciding questions are which A2A operations a gateway supports, whether it sees the model and tool calls an agent makes, and where it can be deployed.

An A2A gateway is a control point for agent-to-agent traffic: it receives calls that use the Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol, checks which callers may reach each agent, forwards the work to the right agent endpoint, and records what happened. In a multi-agent system, it replaces point-to-point connections, each with its own credentials and logs, with one governed entry point. [Bifrost](https://www.getmaxim.ai), the [open-source AI gateway](https://github.com/maximhq/bifrost) built by Maxim AI, is the best choice for enterprises running mission-critical AI workloads that require top-tier performance, scalability, and reliability, and it governs A2A traffic alongside model and MCP tool calls. This guide compares six A2A gateways on protocol coverage, access control, observability, and deployment.

## What Is an A2A Gateway?

An A2A gateway is an intermediary between A2A clients and A2A servers. It serves agent cards for discovery, authorizes each caller per agent, authenticates to the upstream agent, carries tasks, streams, and push notifications, and logs each operation, so individual agent teams do not have to build those controls themselves.

A2A is an open protocol for communication between agents built on different frameworks and run by different teams. Google introduced it, and the [Linux Foundation launched the Agent2Agent project](https://www.linuxfoundation.org/press/linux-foundation-launches-the-agent2agent-protocol-project-to-enable-secure-intelligent-communication-between-ai-agents) on June 23, 2025. The [A2A specification](https://a2a-protocol.org/latest/specification/) defines agent cards, messages, tasks, and artifacts, and three protocol bindings: JSON-RPC, gRPC, and HTTP+JSON. The explainer on [how agent-to-agent communication works](https://www.getmaxim.ai/articles/what-is-the-a2a-protocol-how-agent-to-agent-communication-works/) covers those objects.

![Without a gateway an orchestrator agent holds a separate credential for each remote agent; with an A2A gateway it calls one endpoint that routes to every agent](https://articles-images-cdn.t3.tigrisfiles.io/diagrams/best-a2a-gateways/best-a2a-gateways-point-to-point-vs-gateway.png)

*Figure 1: The gateway turns one credential and one log per agent pair into one grant table and one log for the whole system.*

Multi-agent systems need a gateway once agents cross team or network boundaries. As Figure 1 shows, every new agent pair otherwise adds a credential to store, a URL to keep current, and a log that lives with one team. A gateway centralizes discovery, per-agent access, upstream credentials, long-running task delivery, and tracing.

MCP connects an agent to tools and data, and A2A connects one agent to another; the comparison of [A2A vs MCP](https://www.getmaxim.ai/articles/a2a-vs-mcp/) explains where each fits. The walkthrough of [how an A2A gateway handles agent cards, transports, and push notifications](https://www.getmaxim.ai/articles/a2a-protocol-gateway/) shows the mechanics this list builds on.

## How We Evaluated A2A Gateways

We compared each gateway on six criteria that matter once more than a few agents call each other: A2A protocol coverage, discovery, caller authorization, upstream credentials, observability across agent, model, and tool calls, and deployment. Each criterion maps to one job the gateway performs on an agent call, shown in Figure 2.

![A caller's A2A request passes through card discovery, caller authorization, upstream authentication, and transport bridging before reaching the remote agent, with denied calls and logs branching off](https://articles-images-cdn.t3.tigrisfiles.io/diagrams/best-a2a-gateways/best-a2a-gateways-agent-call-lifecycle.png)

*Figure 2: Each stage maps to one evaluation criterion, and a gateway that skips one leaves that job to every agent team.*

| Criterion | What to check | Why it matters in a multi-agent system |
| --- | --- | --- |
| A2A protocol coverage | A2A version, JSON-RPC, gRPC, and HTTP+JSON bindings, streaming, push notifications | Agents built on different frameworks expose different bindings |
| Discovery | Agent card handling, registry or catalog, card refresh | Callers need current endpoints without copying URLs |
| Caller authorization | Per-agent grants tied to keys, users, or teams | One compromised caller should not reach every agent |
| Upstream credentials | Headers, OAuth 2.0, mutual TLS, secret references | Agent credentials should live in one governed place |
| Observability | Agent operation logs, traces, links to model and tool calls | Debugging a failed task means following it into its LLM and MCP calls |
| Deployment | Managed service, self-hosted, cloud scope, license | Regulated teams often need agent traffic to stay in their own network |

Caller authorization and upstream credentials are separate criteria because they guard different boundaries, as the breakdown of [A2A security across authentication boundaries](https://www.getmaxim.ai/articles/a2a-security/) explains.

## 1. Bifrost

The [Bifrost AI gateway](https://www.getmaxim.ai) is open source and governs A2A agent traffic in the same deployment that governs LLM calls and MCP tool calls. The Agent Gateway in Bifrost registers agents by agent card URL, grants access per virtual key, bridges A2A v1 transports, and groups an agent's model and tool calls with its task in Agent Logs when the agent sends correlation headers.

**Best for:** Bifrost is built for enterprises running mission-critical AI workloads that require top-tier performance, scalability, and reliability. It serves as a centralized AI gateway to route, govern, and secure all AI traffic across models and environments with ultra low latency. Bifrost unifies LLM gateway, MCP gateway, and Agents gateway capabilities into a single platform. Designed for regulated industries and strict enterprise requirements, it supports air-gapped deployments, VPC isolation, and on-prem infrastructure. It provides full control over data, access, and execution, along with strong security, policy enforcement, and governance capabilities.

![A client calls a research agent through the Bifrost Agent Gateway; the agent sends model and MCP calls back through Bifrost with IDs that Agent Logs groups](https://articles-images-cdn.t3.tigrisfiles.io/diagrams/best-a2a-gateways/best-a2a-gateways-bifrost-correlation.png)

*Figure 3: Forwarded credentials keep the caller's access rules on the agent's own calls, and shared IDs put agent, model, and tool activity in one session.*

Key A2A capabilities in Bifrost:

- **Registration and discovery:** teams [register an agent](https://docs.getbifrost.ai/features/agent-gateway/registration) by its agent card URL in the Agent Catalog or in config.json or Helm. Bifrost serves a rewritten card with gateway endpoints and fetches the current card from the agent on each card request.
- **Transport bridging:** Bifrost accepts A2A v1 over JSON-RPC, HTTP+JSON (REST), and gRPC, and the client and agent transports can differ. [Transport recovery](https://docs.getbifrost.ai/features/agent-gateway/transports-and-recovery) moves later requests to the next interface after an endpoint failure, without replaying streams or ambiguous failures that could duplicate a task.
- **Per-agent access:** [agent access](https://docs.getbifrost.ai/features/agent-gateway/access-control) is granted per virtual key, and [Bifrost Enterprise](https://www.getmaxim.ai/enterprise) adds grants through access profiles and projects. An agent grant does not authorize the agent's own model or tool calls, which use their own provider and tool permissions.
- **Upstream credentials:** request authentication supports headers, OAuth 2.0 client credentials, and custom or mutual TLS. Bifrost strips the caller's Bifrost credential by default, and [credential forwarding](https://docs.getbifrost.ai/features/agent-gateway/authentication) is opt-in per agent.
- **Network controls:** private agent destinations need an allowlist entry, and link-local and cloud metadata addresses stay blocked even when an entry matches.
- **Push notifications:** callbacks are registered through Bifrost, and Agent Logs records the agent's update arriving and its delivery to the application as separate events.

[Agent Logs](https://docs.getbifrost.ai/features/agent-gateway/observability) groups operations into sessions by A2A context ID, and when an agent sends the `x-bf-session-id` and `x-bf-agent-correlation-id` headers on its model and tool requests, the same session shows its LLM and MCP logs. A2A operation spans also export through OpenTelemetry with attributes such as `gen_ai.agent.name` and `a2a.method.name`.

Because the same gateway routes [10,000+ models across 25+ providers](https://docs.getbifrost.ai/providers/supported-providers/overview) and governs tool calls as an [MCP gateway](https://www.getmaxim.ai/mcp-gateway), a forwarded caller credential carries the same access rules onto an agent's model and tool calls, the identity model behind [AI governance in Bifrost](https://www.getmaxim.ai/ai-governance).

The [Agent Gateway launch post](https://www.getmaxim.ai/bifrost/blog/introducing-agent-gateway-in-bifrost-one-gateway-for-models-tools-and-agents) describes the design, and the [governance resource hub](https://www.getmaxim.ai/resources/governance) covers virtual keys, budgets, and access rules for model and tool traffic. Two limits apply today: the Agent Gateway supports A2A as its agent protocol, and token usage and cost sit on the correlated LLM logs rather than on the A2A operation.

## 2. Kong AI Gateway

Kong AI Gateway proxies A2A traffic through the AI A2A Proxy plugin on Kong Gateway 3.14 and later, or through the AI Agent entity in AI Gateway 2.0. It handles JSON-RPC and REST bindings, rewrites agent card URLs so clients route through the gateway, and governs LLM and MCP traffic too.

**Best for:** Teams that already run Kong for API management and want agent traffic in the same gateway.

- **Access:** clients authenticate through an OpenID Connect or key-auth strategy before routing, and access control lists decide which consumers reach an agent.
- **Policies:** per-agent or per-consumer rate limits reject excess requests with a 429, and AI policies add PII detection, input validation, and request logging.
- **Observability:** OpenTelemetry spans record task state, context IDs, time to first byte, and SSE event counts.
- **Upstream signing:** SigV4 signing reaches agents that accept only AWS IAM requests, such as agents on AgentCore Runtime.

**Considerations:** the 3.14 A2A plugin is part of AI Gateway Enterprise (Konnect Plus also lists A2A traffic), the plugin runs as a transparent proxy that does not manage task state, the agent Catalog is in beta, and fully self-hosted deployments need Kong's separate Gateway Enterprise offering. Teams weighing Kong for model traffic can compare [Kong AI Gateway alternatives](https://www.getmaxim.ai/articles/best-kong-ai-gateway-alternatives-in-2026/).

## 3. Gravitee

Gravitee exposes upstream agents through an A2A Proxy that serves the agent's card through the gateway and rewrites its endpoint URL, so callers reach the agent through Gravitee. The A2A Proxy is part of Gravitee Gamma, first released on June 26, 2026, and of APIM 4.11 and later, and runs in the same runtime as Gravitee's LLM and MCP proxies.

**Best for:** Teams standardized on Gravitee API Management that want agent traffic under the same plans and policies as their APIs.

- **Client authentication:** keyless, API key, JWT, OAuth 2.0, or mTLS at the gateway.
- **Authorization:** Authorization Management grants or restricts which principals can invoke an agent, and agent identities can be registered as OAuth clients in Gravitee Access Management.
- **Observability:** OpenTelemetry tracing per A2A proxy, with release notes describing traces across agent-to-tool, agent-to-LLM, and agent-to-agent hops.
- **Deployment:** self-hosted, hybrid with a Gravitee-hosted control plane, or SaaS.

**Considerations:** A2A requires an enterprise license with the agent-management pack, and the docs name no A2A-specific rate-limit or guardrail policy or supported A2A versions. The case for [one gateway across models, tools, and agents](https://www.getmaxim.ai/articles/agent-gateway-vs-llm-gateway/) applies here as well.

## 4. MuleSoft Agent Fabric

MuleSoft Agent Fabric combines a registry, an Agent Broker, and Omni Gateway (formerly Flex Gateway), which proxies A2A and MCP traffic. Omni Gateway ships A2A v1 policies for agent card URL rewriting, token-based rate limiting across JSON-RPC, HTTP+JSON, and gRPC, Amazon Bedrock and Azure content guardrails, PII detection, and schema validation.

**Best for:** Organizations already on Anypoint Platform that want agents, APIs, and MCP servers in one inventory.

- **Registry:** scanners discover and register agents and MCP servers built on platforms such as Amazon Bedrock AgentCore and Google Vertex AI.
- **Orchestration:** the Agent Broker routes work across A2A-compliant agents, and an A2A Bridge makes a non-A2A agent A2A-compliant without changing it.
- **Model traffic:** a model proxy on Omni Gateway gives one governed endpoint for multiple LLM providers.
- **Deployment:** managed on CloudHub 2.0 or Runtime Fabric, or self-managed, with a MuleSoft-hosted control plane.

**Considerations:** telemetry flows to Anypoint Monitoring with no OpenTelemetry export stated, pricing is in Mule Credits, and the broker orchestrates only A2A-compliant agents. The comparison of [agent orchestration and an agent gateway](https://www.getmaxim.ai/articles/ai-agent-orchestration-vs-agent-gateway/) explains how a broker and a gateway divide the work.

## 5. Google Cloud Agent Gateway

Google Cloud Agent Gateway is the governance and security enforcement layer of the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform. It governs A2A delegation and task APIs and MCP traffic, checks Agent Registry before allowing connections, and reached general availability on June 18, 2026, for agents on Google-managed runtimes.

**Best for:** Teams building and running agents on the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform.

- **Identity:** each agent gets a SPIFFE ID, Context-Aware Access enforces mTLS and DPoP, and all connections are blocked unless an IAM policy grants access.
- **Registry:** Agent Registry supports A2A 0.3 and 1.0 agent cards, and each gateway instance governs up to 5,000 registered resources.
- **Content:** Model Armor screens prompts and tool responses for prompt injection, sensitive data, and harmful content.
- **Observability:** OpenTelemetry traces and access logs in Cloud Logging and Cloud Trace, with the Cloud Trace integration in preview.

**Considerations:** coverage is limited to agents on the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform, with GKE, Cloud Run, and cross-cloud support announced as coming soon; Gemini Enterprise apps get egress mode only; token budgets are coming soon; no LLM routing is described; and egress (Agent-to-Anywhere) usage is billed on Agent Compute vCPU-hours. The guide to [AI agent registries](https://www.getmaxim.ai/articles/ai-agent-registry/) covers registries that span clouds.

## 6. Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Gateway

Amazon Bedrock AgentCore Gateway is a fully managed AWS gateway that fronts A2A agents through HTTP passthrough targets with an A2A protocol type, alongside MCP targets and inference targets for LLM traffic. It forwards A2A requests without protocol translation and applies access control, Bedrock Guardrails, and OpenTelemetry spans.

**Best for:** Teams building and hosting agents on AWS AgentCore.

- **Authentication:** inbound IAM or OAuth with custom JWTs, and outbound SigV4, OAuth tokens from AgentCore Identity, or API keys.
- **Policies:** Bedrock Guardrails block forbidden content before it reaches the agent, and per-user limits cover requests, tokens, and connection duration.
- **Discovery:** AgentCore Runtime hosts A2A servers with agent cards at the well-known path, and AWS Agent Registry, in preview, validates A2A agent records.
- **Observability:** OTEL-compliant spans and CloudWatch metrics for gateway invocations.

**Considerations:** the gateway is AWS-managed only, the AgentCore FAQ still calls broader A2A support coming soon while the developer guide documents A2A passthrough targets, and card rewriting and A2A streaming through passthrough targets are not stated. The roundup of [AgentCore Gateway alternatives](https://www.getmaxim.ai/articles/bedrock-agentcore-gateway-alternatives/) covers options outside AWS.

## How to Choose an A2A Gateway for Your Multi-Agent System

Choose an A2A gateway by where your agents run and what else the gateway must govern. Agents on one cloud's agent platform fit that cloud's gateway, and API management estates fit their vendor's A2A features. Teams that want an open-source gateway that bridges all three A2A bindings, forwards caller credentials, and traces each agent task into its model and tool calls fit Bifrost.

![Decision flow: teams wanting an open-source gateway that traces agent tasks into model and tool calls choose Bifrost; single-cloud platforms use their cloud gateway; API management estates use their vendor](https://articles-images-cdn.t3.tigrisfiles.io/diagrams/best-a2a-gateways/best-a2a-gateways-selection-flow.png)

*Figure 4: Where agents run decides the shortlist; the platform you already operate decides the rest.*

Four questions narrow the choice:

- **Which A2A bindings do your agents expose?** A gateway that bridges JSON-RPC, HTTP+JSON, and gRPC lets callers and agents use different transports.
- **Do long-running tasks use streams or push notifications?** Check that the gateway relays both and logs push delivery separately from the agent's update.
- **Must an agent's own model and tool calls follow the caller's identity?** That requires the gateway to govern LLM and MCP traffic and to accept forwarded credentials.
- **Where must agent traffic stay?** Managed gateways keep traffic in that provider's cloud; regulated teams often need one inside their own network.

Two other products also support A2A. Azure API Management imports A2A agent APIs from an agent card on most tiers but supports only JSON-RPC A2A APIs. IBM ContextForge (Apache 2.0) registers A2A agents, and its docs describe exposing them as MCP tools or through a REST invoke endpoint rather than an A2A server endpoint.

For a broader view that covers LLM and MCP gateways too, see [how to choose an agent gateway](https://www.getmaxim.ai/articles/how-to-choose-an-agent-gateway/), and for the protocol mechanics under every option here, the guide to [running A2A agent traffic through a gateway](https://www.getmaxim.ai/articles/a2a-protocol-gateway/).

## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is an A2A gateway?

An A2A gateway is an intermediary between A2A clients and the agents they call. It serves agent cards, checks which callers may reach each agent, authenticates to the upstream agent, carries tasks, streams, and push notifications, and logs each operation, giving platform teams one place to grant access to agents and trace their work.

### What is the A2A protocol?

The Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol is an open standard for communication between AI agents built on different frameworks. An agent publishes an agent card describing its skills, endpoints, and authentication, and clients send it messages that can create tasks and return artifacts. A2A is a Linux Foundation project with JSON-RPC, gRPC, and HTTP+JSON bindings.

### What is the difference between A2A and MCP?

MCP connects an agent to tools and data sources, while A2A connects one agent to another as a peer that runs its own reasoning and long-running tasks. Most multi-agent systems use both: an orchestrator delegates to specialist agents over A2A, and each agent calls tools over MCP. A gateway that governs both, like the [MCP gateway in Bifrost](https://www.getmaxim.ai/resources/mcp-gateway), applies one identity model to the whole chain.

### What is an agent card?

An agent card is the JSON document an A2A agent publishes to describe itself: its name, skills, interfaces and transports, capabilities such as streaming or push notifications, and required authentication, usually at a well-known path. An A2A gateway can serve a rewritten card that points callers at gateway endpoints instead of the agent's own address, as the guide to the [A2A agent card](https://www.getmaxim.ai/articles/a2a-agent-card/) shows.

### Do multi-agent systems need an A2A gateway?

A small system with two or three agents inside one service can call agents directly. Once agents belong to different teams, run in different networks, or come from vendors, a gateway removes per-pair credentials and centralizes access grants, push callbacks, and logs, the [agent governance](https://www.getmaxim.ai/resources/governance) problem platform teams inherit.

### Can an A2A gateway control an agent's model and tool calls?

Only if those calls also pass through a gateway, because an A2A gateway sees caller-to-agent traffic, not the model and tool requests an agent makes while working. Bifrost covers both paths: an agent can forward the caller's Bifrost credential and [send correlation headers](https://docs.getbifrost.ai/features/agent-gateway/integrating-your-agent) on its LLM and MCP requests, so those calls are checked against the caller's permissions and appear in the same session.

## Getting Started with Bifrost

The best A2A gateway for a multi-agent system sees the whole call graph: agent calls, the model calls agents make, and the tools they use. Bifrost governs all three in one open-source gateway inside your own infrastructure. To see the Agent Gateway with your agents, [book a Bifrost demo](https://www.getmaxim.ai/book-a-demo), or browse the [Bifrost resources](https://www.getmaxim.ai/resources) first.
